Kochi: A projectile hit an Indian-flagged vessel sinking it off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea while all 14 people including 13 Indians on board were rescued.
India condemned the attack on MSV Faize Noore Oliya which suffered an “unprovoked attack”, BBC reported.
India said the attacks on commercial shipping in the region “deeply worrisome” as on vessels sailing through the Red Sea, an alternative waterway since Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz in February.
Much of the region’s shipping routes have been disrupted since the US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
Since then, Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz hugely impacting global oil prices.
A recent spate of attacks by Yemen’s Houthi fighters on Saudi tankers has further heightened risks in the region.
The Houthis announced what it called a blockade on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea ports on July 20.
The US and Iran agreed to halt military operations and reopen the Strait to reach an agreement to end the war over the following 60 days.
An Iranian attack on ships in the strait three weeks led to the US calling off the ceasefire.
US officials said on Tuesday that talks were progressing to reopen the Strait even as Iran said it is not negotiating with the US and is instead talking to Oman.
