Kochi: In a setback to Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the safety authority has issued a temporary permit to conduct operation in the newly built S N Junction-Tripunithura sector.
Some issues related to construction of the girders has led to the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) issuing only four months conditional clearance to Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) in the 1.20-km viaduct, media reports said.
The CMRS has directed the KMRL to get the corridor inspected by experts from IIT/CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC) within four months and submit a compliance report.
Based on the report, the CMRS will take a decision on giving permanent permission to operate services in the sector.
The KMRL failed to give satisfactory response to clarification sought by CMRS’ questions on minor deviations, the reports.
The inspection of the corridor was conducted on February 12 and 13 by the CMRS which has allowed it to operate services at a maximum permissible speed of 60 kmph.
On the other hand, the KMRL said the temporary permission was not uncommon in metro rail systems.
The KMRL is taking steps to rope in IIT/CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC) to prepare a compliance report to be placed at the CMRS within the four-months, the reports said.
