Kochi: Strong rumours are making rounds about Sri Lanka Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigning in the wake of unrelenting public protest over serious financial crises in the country.
Reports said that he tendered resignation to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Sunday.
Despite imposing emergency and a 36 hour long curfew, the public unrest continued unabated.
The government had imposed the curfew starting from 6 pm on Saturday while the emergency came into force from April 1.
Lawmakers belonging to the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) staged an anti-government protest against imposing restrictions. They took a march to the Independence Square built to commemorate Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948.
The police on Sunday arrested over 600 persons in the Western Province for violating the curfew, media reports said.
