Kochi: Political parties are in a state of shock as reports of the Election Commission of India (ECI) planning to introduce Special Summary Revision (SIR) across the country, media reports said.
The ECI organised the third Conference of Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all States and Union Territories this year at the India International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar inaugurated the conference in the presence of Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The meeting assessed the preparedness of State and UT CEO offices for the upcoming nationwide electoral rolls.
CEOs from across the country shared detailed updates on the number of electors, the qualifying date of the last SIR, and the status of their respective electoral rolls. They also presented progress on digitisation and uploading of electoral rolls on State/UT websites.
There were suggestions of various documents that could help ensure inclusion of all eligible citizens in the electoral roll while preventing the entry of ineligible individuals.
The Commission wanted public friendly systems to encourage citizens participation.
Appointment and training status of District Election Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and Booth Level Agents (BLAs) were also reviewed.
