Hearing of Lavalin case postponed

Kochi: The SNC Lavalin case has been postponed to another day as the three-member constitutional bench headed by the Chief Justice could not consider the case as it was preoccupied with another important case today.

The case was fifth in the list of the cases to be considered. The bench headed by the Chief Justice was considering petitions pertaining to economic reservation due to which the Lavalin case got postponed.

The Lavalin case pertains to the CBI challenging in 2017 the verdict of the Kerala High Court upholding the ruling of the CBI special court acquiting Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and a few others in the case in 2013.
Since then the case was adjourned 30 times in the Supreme Court.

The Lavalin case is all about allegations of huge corrpution in granting contract to the Canadian firm  to maitain three hydroelectric projects in Idukki district when Pinarayi Vijayan was the Electricity minister in the Left government in 1996.

When  the Congress government came to power, it ordered a vigilance probe which got stuck until the Comptroller and Audit General came out with an announcement about the state suffering heavily due to the deal.

The Kerala High Court ordered a CBI probe in the case in 2009 when the LDF government headed V S Achuthanandan was in power from 2006 to 2011.
